THE SIMPLEST EXERCISE

Walking is the cheapest and most available form of exercise. You need no special equipment, no membership card and no trainer — a comfortable pair of shoes is enough. Doctors say half an hour of brisk walking a day can lower the risk of heart disease, help control weight and improve mood, because the body produces endorphins, the chemicals that make us feel happier.

Unlike running, walking puts very little pressure on the knees and back, so it suits people of all ages, including those who have not exercised for years. It is also easy to build into a daily routine: getting off the bus one stop earlier, taking the stairs instead of the lift, or walking to the shops rather than driving.

The benefits are not only physical. Walking side by side is often easier than sitting face to face, so families and colleagues who walk together tend to talk more openly. In one British study, office workers who took a short walk together at lunchtime reported feeling closer to their colleagues after only three weeks.

Yet most people still do not walk enough. A recent survey found that the average adult spends more than seven hours a day sitting down. The solution, experts say, is not to set a difficult target but to start with ten minutes a day and add a little more each week.

Câu 71. Which of the following best serves as the title of the passage?

A. Walking: Cheap, Easy and Good for You

B. Why Running Is Better Than Walking

C. How to Buy the Right Pair of Shoes

D. The Dangers of Sitting Down

Câu 72. According to the passage, what makes walking suitable for people of all ages?

A. It requires a personal trainer.

B. It puts very little pressure on the knees and back.

C. It can only be done early in the morning.

D. It burns more calories than running.

Câu 73. The word "brisk" in paragraph 1 is closest in meaning to ______.

A. slow

B. short

C. quick

D. gentle

Câu 74. The word "those" in paragraph 2 refers to ______.

B. shoes

C. knees

D. people

Câu 75. What did the British study find?

A. Office workers who walked together felt closer to their colleagues.

B. Walking at lunchtime made workers less productive.

C. Most workers preferred walking alone.

D. Workers who walked together talked less than before.

Câu 76. It can be inferred from the passage that ______.

A. walking is much less popular than running

C. only young people can walk safely

D. walking cannot replace going to the gym

Bài 5 (Câu 83 – 90). Cloze test 2 – The generation gap

Chọn phương án đúng nhất (A, B, C hoặc D) để điền vào mỗi chỗ trống trong đoạn văn sau.

THE GAP THAT WILL NOT CLOSE

Every generation complains about the next one, and every generation is convinced that the gap has never been (83) ______. In many families the arguments are familiar: clothes, hairstyles, the hours spent online, and the choice of career.

Part of the problem is that parents and children grow up in different worlds. Parents who were (84) ______ in harder times tend to see financial security as the highest goal, (85) ______ their children, who have never gone hungry, care more about doing work they enjoy. When a father insists that his son (86) ______ become an engineer, the son may hear not advice but a command.

Yet a generation gap is not necessarily a disaster. Dr Lan, who has studied family relationships for twenty years, argues that it is simply a sign that society is changing. "The problem," she says, "is not the gap (87) ______ but the silence that sometimes comes with it." Many teenagers stop explaining their choices once they feel they are not being listened to.

What can parents do? The answer, most experts agree, is to listen more and advise (88) ______. Instead of asking "Which university will you go to?", a parent might ask "What kind of work would make you happy?" It costs nothing, yet it can (89) ______ a family closer.

In the end, the families that cope best are not those without disagreements. They are the ones in which both sides are willing to talk — and to change their (90) ______.

Bài 6 (Câu 91 – 100). Cloze test 3 – Cities of the future

Chọn phương án đúng nhất (A, B, C hoặc D) để điền vào mỗi chỗ trống trong đoạn văn sau.

A CITY THAT WORKS FOR EVERYONE

When we imagine a smart city, we usually picture young people booking a bus with an app or paying for a coffee with a touch of a bank card. But this picture may be too (91) ______. Some of the most successful projects of this kind are in fact designed for older residents.

In Singapore, sensors in the flats of elderly people who live (92) ______ record how much water and electricity they use. If there is no activity for several hours, the system (93) ______ a warning to a relative or a social worker, who can then check that everything is well. In Copenhagen, an app tells cyclists how fast they need to ride to (94) ______ the next green light.

Critics, (95) ______, warn that technology can also widen the gap between the generations. Many older people have never learnt to use smart devices, and some cannot (96) ______ them. If public services become "app-only", these people are left (97) ______.

The solution, according to Dr Anna Lee, is not less technology (98) ______ better design. "A smart city should be smart for everybody," she says. That means large buttons, clear instructions and a helpline that a real person answers. Some cities have already begun to follow her advice: in Seoul, every smart kiosk in a public building now has a "help" button that (99) ______ the user to a member of staff within thirty seconds.

Such changes cost money, Dr Lee admits, but the cost of leaving people out is higher. A city that works only for the young, she argues, is not a smart city (100) ______ all.

Bài 3 (Câu 71 – 76). Đọc hiểu

Read the passage and choose the correct answer to each of the following questions.

Imagine a city where everything you need – schools, shops, offices, parks and hospitals – is within a fifteen-minute walk or cycle from your home. This is the idea behind the "15-minute city", a plan that is being tested in Paris, Melbourne and many other places.

The idea is simple. For decades, city planners have separated the places where people live from the places where they work. As a result, millions of people spend hours every day travelling to and from the office. The 15-minute city brings homes, workplaces and services closer together. People who live in such a neighbourhood do not need a car, so there is less traffic and less air pollution.

However, the plan is not easy to carry out. In many cities, the centre is already crowded, and there is not enough space for new schools or clinics. Some people also worry that their neighbourhood will become more expensive when it becomes more convenient, and that poorer families will be forced to move away.

Supporters believe these problems can be solved with careful planning. For them, the goal is not to stop people from travelling, but to give them a choice: they can walk to the baker's, cycle to work, or take a bus when they need to go further.

D. people do not need a car

Câu 75. According to paragraph 4, what do supporters want to give people?

A. a choice of how to travel

B. more cars

C. free public transport

D. bigger houses
