Living in an extended family can bring tremendous emotional security and valuable support, but it also presents noticeable challenges, particularly regarding the generation gap. An extended family typically includes grandparents, parents, and children residing under one roof. Because each generation grew up in a distinct socio-economic period, their beliefs, values, and lifestyle preferences often clash.

Grandparents, having experienced hardship during wartime or economic crises, tend to value frugality, tradition, and respect for authority. In contrast, grandchildren—members of Generation Z—grow up immersed in the digital era. They are accustomed to immediate access to information, global trends, and individual expression. Consequently, disagreements frequently arise over simple everyday matters such as appropriate clothing, bedtime routines, dining table etiquette, or the excessive use of smartphones.

Moreover, differences in career aspirations often ignite intense discussions. While older members prefer secure, traditional professions such as teaching or civil service, the younger generation tends to pursue dynamic careers in technology, digital media, or creative arts. These misunderstandings may lead to feelings of alienation if family members fail to listen with an open mind.

To bridge this divide, mutual empathy and regular communication are essential. Family meals or weekend gatherings provide wonderful opportunities for different generations to share their personal stories and listen without judgment. When both sides demonstrate flexibility, the extended family remains a warm sanctuary rather than a source of stress.

Câu 16 (0,35 điểm). What is the main idea of the passage?

A. The financial benefits and disadvantages of living in an extended family.

B. Why members of Generation Z refuse to live with their grandparents.

C. The causes of the generation gap in extended families and how to resolve them.
