Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C or D on your answer sheet to indicate the correct answer to each of the questions from 23 to 30.

The modern concept of family life has undergone profound transformations over the last few decades. In traditional societies, the extended family—consisting of grandparents, parents, children, and sometimes other relatives living under the same roof—was the predominant structure. In this model, gender roles were distinctly defined: men were the primary breadwinners, responsible for financial security, while women were expected to dedicate themselves entirely to homemaking and child-rearing.

Today, however, the nuclear family consisting of parents and their children has become far more common, especially in urban areas. This structural transition has been accompanied by a major shift in gender roles. As more women pursue higher education and career opportunities, they contribute significantly to household income. Consequently, the conventional division of labour has blurred. Men are increasingly willing to share household duties, from cooking and grocery shopping to cleaning and taking care of children.

Sociological studies reveal that shared domestic responsibilities bring substantial benefits. When fathers take an active role in child care, children tend to develop better social skills, perform better academically, and show higher emotional resilience. Furthermore, couples who divide chores equitably report higher levels of marital satisfaction and lower rates of domestic conflict. Sharing chores fosters a sense of teamwork and mutual respect, which is fundamental to maintaining a harmonious atmosphere.

Nevertheless, balancing work and domestic commitments remains a challenging ordeal for many modern working parents. Long working hours and high living costs can cause severe stress. To overcome these pressures, experts emphasize the importance of open communication and flexibility within the family. Instead of striving for rigid perfection, parents should support each other and encourage their children to participate in daily tasks according to their age.

Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C or D on your answer sheet to indicate the correct answer to each of the questions from 31 to 40.

Plastic pollution has become one of the most pressing environmental catastrophes of the twenty-first century. Since the mass production of synthetic plastics began in the 1950s, billions of metric tons of plastic products have been manufactured worldwide. [I] Because plastic is lightweight, durable, and remarkably inexpensive, it has permeated every aspect of human life, from food packaging and consumer electronics to automotive components. [II] However, these very qualities—particularly its extraordinary durability—make plastic an enduring ecological menace. Most commercial plastics take hundreds of years to decompose naturally in the environment.

A vast proportion of discarded plastic waste is mismanaged, eventually finding its way into rivers, seas, and oceans. Marine ecosystems suffer catastrophic harm as a result. Sea turtles frequently confuse floating plastic bags with jellyfish, their primary food source, leading to intestinal blockage and starvation. [III] Furthermore, seabirds and marine mammals regularly become entangled in abandoned fishing nets, which impairs their mobility and often leads to fatal injuries. It is estimated that millions of marine animals perish each year due to plastic ingestion and entanglement.

Over time, through exposure to sunlight, wave action, and physical abrasion, large plastic debris fragments into microscopic particles known as microplastics. These tiny plastic particles, often smaller than five millimeters, are virtually impossible to extract from marine waters. [IV] Plankton and small fish inadvertently ingest microplastics, which subsequently accumulate along the marine food chain. Scientists have detected microplastics in a wide range of commercial seafood, as well as in tap water, bottled drinks, and even table salt. Consequently, toxic chemical additives in plastics, such as phthalates and bisphenol A (BPA), may pose serious health hazards to humans, including endocrine disruption and immune dysfunction.

Addressing the plastic crisis demands concerted global collaboration rather than piecemeal local initiatives. Governments across the world are gradually enacting legislation to ban single-use plastics and hold manufacturers financially accountable for their packaging waste. Simultaneously, scientists are pioneering innovative alternatives, such as biodegradable packaging derived from seaweed, cornstarch, and agricultural waste. On an individual level, adopting a zero-waste mindset by refusing disposable items and diligently recycling can collectively alleviate the burden on the biosphere.
