WHY SCHOOL MUSIC FESTIVALS MATTER
At Oakridge High School, the annual music festival was once seen simply as fun entertainment before semester exams. However, the teachers recently turned this event into an exciting school project. Instead of teachers organizing everything, students formed their own teams, chose their songs, set rehearsal schedules, and managed stage lighting, sound systems, and ticket sales.
At first, some talented solo singers and guitarists did not want to join bands. They believed that performing alone was the best way to show off their musical skills. However, during group practice, they quickly realized that a great guitar solo or a good voice could not make up for a poor drum beat or a band that played out of tune. To deliver a successful show, these students had to listen carefully to each other, accept advice from bandmates, and put the overall band performance first.
The social media part of the festival also taught students an interesting lesson. The media team posted short rehearsal videos on the Internet to invite more students to attend. While an energetic dance video with modern pop music quickly gained thousands of views, a classical piano piece received much less attention. Teachers used this comparison to discuss online media with students. The students learned that flashy videos and catchy music often attract quick views online, but views alone do not show how much effort or artistic quality an artwork has.
On the final night of the festival, the most memorable moment was not winning trophies, but the great teamwork among students. Competitors from different bands gladly helped each other tune guitars and carry heavy amplifiers backstage. The festival clearly showed that school music activities are more than just competitions. They help students develop teamwork, communication skills, and mutual respect.

THE ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT OF FAST FASHION
In recent years, the clothing industry has changed rapidly. New fashion designs from runways and social media are produced quickly in large factories and sold in high-street stores within just a few weeks. This business model, known as fast fashion, allows young people to buy stylish clothes at very cheap prices. However, behind these cheap price tags lies a serious environmental problem.
The main attraction of fast fashion is its low cost. Teenagers and young adults can easily buy new outfits to keep up with short-lived trends. Unfortunately, because these clothes are so cheap, buyers often treat them as disposable items. Many shirts and dresses are worn only two or three times before being thrown away when a new trend appears. Every year, millions of tonnes of old clothes end up in landfills or are burned, releasing harmful gases and toxic chemicals into the air.
[I] The environmental harm of the fashion industry begins long before clothes reach store shelves. [II] Producing fabric requires enormous amounts of fresh water and energy. [III] In addition, synthetic materials like polyester and nylon release tiny plastic fibers during washing, which enter rivers and oceans and harm marine animals. [IV] Shipping clothes across different countries also burns a huge amount of fuel, producing greenhouse gases that cause global warming.
Fortunately, protecting the environment does not mean teenagers must stop caring about personal style. Sustainable fashion offers many practical solutions. Instead of buying cheap clothes whenever there is a sale, young people can choose a "slow fashion" lifestyle. This means building a small wardrobe with high-quality, long-lasting items that can be mixed and matched easily.
Simple daily actions can also make a big difference. Organizing clothes-swapping events with friends, shopping at second-hand thrift stores, and learning basic sewing skills to fix torn shirts help students refresh their style without harming nature. When consumers choose to repair and reuse their clothes, they send a clear message to fashion brands that quality and environmental protection are more important than throwaway fashion.

WHY TEENAGERS SHOULD DO HOUSEHOLD CHORES
Many teenagers consider household chores a boring interruption to their study time or leisure activities. However, teachers and family psychologists agree that doing chores is an essential step toward growing up and becoming independent. When teenagers regularly take part in daily chores at home, they learn practical life skills that school textbooks cannot teach.
Cooking a simple meal requires planning, buying the right ingredients, and managing time well. Doing the laundry helps teenagers learn how to take care of clothes and operate washing machines safely. Keeping bedrooms clean builds self-discipline and good habits. When parents give chores to their children, their goal is not just to get free help, but to help young people learn how to take care of themselves in the future.
The way parents assign chores also makes a big difference. If cleaning the house is used only as a punishment when a child makes a mistake, teenagers will quickly hate housework. On the contrary, when chores are shared fairly as a team effort, teenagers feel respected as helpful members of the family. Mistakes are also a natural part of learning. If a teenager washes a woolen shirt in hot water and it shrinks, that mistake teaches a real lesson about paying attention to instructions better than any scolding.
Finally, sharing chores helps teenagers develop empathy and gratitude toward their parents. By doing regular housework, teenagers realize how much time and energy their parents spend every day. They learn that a clean and cozy home does not happen by accident, but requires joint effort and caring from everyone.

DOES BIRTH ORDER SHAPE YOUR PERSONALITY?
For many years, people have believed that birth order strongly influences a person's personality. According to popular belief, the oldest child is usually responsible, hardworking, and born to be a leader. The middle child is often quiet, friendly, and good at solving arguments. Meanwhile, the youngest child is seen as fun-loving, outgoing, but sometimes a bit spoiled. While these ideas are fun to discuss at family dinners, modern psychological research reveals a very different story.
The theory of birth order was first introduced in the early twentieth century by an Austrian psychologist named Alfred Adler. Adler suggested that a child's position in the family creates a lasting impression on their adult character. For example, he believed that firstborn children feel upset when a new baby arrives, which drives them to work hard and follow rules to win back their parents' attention. In contrast, youngest children were thought to be more rebellious as they try to be different from their older brothers and sisters.
[I] In recent years, however, scientists have carefully tested Adler's ideas using modern research methods. [II] A large study of over 440,000 high school students in the United States found that the connection between birth order and major personality traits was tiny. [III] Another major study in Germany, the UK, and the US also showed that birth order has no real effect on key qualities such as emotional stability, friendliness, or responsibility. [IV]
So why do so many people still believe in birth order stereotypes? Psychologists say this happens because of "confirmation bias." When an oldest child acts responsibly, parents quickly credit birth order, forgetting that the child is simply older and has had more time to learn. Furthermore, people often remember examples that match their beliefs while ignoring examples that disagree.
In reality, human personality is shaped by many factors, including genes, family environment, school experiences, and personal choices. Deciding who someone is based only on when they were born in a family is too simple. To truly understand a person, we need to look at their individual life rather than relying on common family labels.

REDUCING HOUSEHOLD FOOD WASTE
When people talk about environmental pollution, they often think of smoke from factories or exhaust fumes from cars and motorbikes. However, a major environmental problem happens right inside our home kitchens: household food waste. Around the world, millions of tonnes of good food are thrown away every year by ordinary families. An unfinished meal, half a loaf of bread, or vegetables bought without a meal plan may seem unimportant on their own. However, when added together, they represent a huge waste of water, farmland, labor, and transportation energy.
The main reason for food waste in families is poor shopping habits. Consumers often buy too much food when supermarkets offer discounts or buy-one-get-one-free deals. In addition, messy refrigerators make this problem worse. When food items are pushed to the back of fridge shelves and forgotten, they go bad and have to be thrown into the rubbish bin.
Solving this problem does not require high technology, but simply good daily habits. First, writing a grocery shopping list based on a realistic weekly meal plan stops impulsive buying at supermarkets. Second, organizing food properly in the fridge keeps ingredients fresh longer. Placing older food items at the front of shelves ensures they are eaten before newer items. Writing the purchase date on food containers also helps family members know what to eat first.
Finally, reducing food waste is an easy and direct way to protect our planet. It helps families save money on grocery bills while reducing the amount of waste sent to landfills, where rotting food releases harmful greenhouse gases like methane. By becoming smart and careful consumers, each household can save money and help keep the Earth green.

BUILDING A GREEN AND SIMPLE WARDROBE
Like many teenagers, Ha used to spend most of her pocket money on trendy, cheap clothes. Whenever fashion influencers on TikTok or Instagram promoted a new trend, she felt pushed to buy matching outfits immediately. Fast-fashion stores made it easy and cheap to buy new clothes every weekend. However, one day while cleaning her bedroom, Ha was surprised to find stacks of clothes that she had worn only once or that still had price tags on them. Many shirts had lost their shape after a single wash or looked outdated after just a month.
Upset by this waste, Ha decided to learn more about the fashion industry. She found out that global clothing production produces about 10% of the world's carbon emissions—more than all international flights and shipping combined. Dyeing and finishing fabrics is also one of the largest causes of water pollution. Furthermore, synthetic fabrics like polyester and nylon do not break down naturally, remaining in landfills for hundreds of years while releasing harmful microplastics into rivers and seas.
[I] Ha realized that she did not have to stop caring about fashion completely. [II] Instead, she created her own "30-Wear Rule": before buying any new item of clothing, she asked herself if she would wear it at least thirty times. [III] She also learned basic sewing skills to fix loose buttons and small tears, and she started swapping clothes with her classmates every few months. [IV]
Changing her shopping habits helped Ha save a lot of money. Before, she always looked for the cheapest price tag. Now, she looks at the "cost-per-wear." A twenty-dollar cheap shirt worn only twice costs ten dollars per wear. In contrast, a sixty-dollar quality jacket worn one hundred times costs only sixty cents per wear. Buying durable clothes made from natural or recycled materials turned out to be much cheaper in the long run.
Ha's personal changes will not fix the global environmental problem by themselves. Big clothing companies still need to adopt green materials and reduce factory pollution. However, smart choices by young consumers show fashion brands that young people care about quality, durability, and the planet.
