Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C, or D on your answer sheet to indicate the correct answer to each of the questions from 23 to 30.

Throughout history, remarkable people have shown how courage and kindness can improve society. Among them, Florence Nightingale is remembered as an outstanding pioneer who transformed modern healthcare and hospital conditions. Born into a wealthy British family in 1820, Nightingale chose not to follow the easy life expected of rich women at the time. Instead, she decided to become a nurse—a job that was seen as unpleasant and poorly organized back then.

Her most famous achievements took place during the Crimean War in the 1850s. When Nightingale arrived at the British military hospital in Scutari, she was shocked by what she saw: injured soldiers were lying in dirty rooms with bad air, very little medicine, and unsafe water. Infectious illnesses like typhus and cholera were killing more soldiers than actual battle injuries.

Without delay, Nightingale introduced strict hygiene rules. She organized the thorough cleaning of the wards, arranged clean drinking water, and made sure patients received healthy meals every day. At night, she often walked through the dark wards carrying a small lamp to check on sick soldiers, which earned her the famous name "The Lady with the Lamp." Within months, the death rate at the hospital fell dramatically from over forty percent to only about two percent.

After returning to Britain, Nightingale used hospital records and clear statistics to persuade government leaders to rebuild military and civilian hospitals. In 1860, she established a training school for nurses at St Thomas' Hospital in London, setting high standards for modern nursing. Her hard work proved that good hygiene and compassionate care are vital to saving human lives.

In recent years, many health experts have focused not only on increasing how long people live, but also on improving their "healthspan"—the number of years people live in good health without serious illnesses. While advances in modern medicine have helped people live longer, many elderly individuals spend their final years suffering from chronic diseases. Because of this, scientists are paying close attention to special regions known as "Blue Zones," where an unusually high number of people live past age one hundred while staying healthy and active.

[I] Researchers studying these communities in Okinawa (Japan), Sardinia (Italy), and Nicoya (Costa Rica) have found that daily habits are far more important than rare genes. [II] The most noticeable factor is their simple and healthy diet. Residents mainly eat plant-based foods such as beans, whole grains, vegetables, and nuts, while rarely consuming processed snacks and sugary drinks. [III] In addition, they practice mindful eating habits, such as stopping when they feel about eighty percent full, which helps them maintain a healthy weight. [IV]

Regular, gentle physical activity is another key secret to their long lives. Instead of sitting all day at a desk and then doing exhausting workouts at a gym, people in Blue Zones move naturally throughout the day. They tend their gardens, walk up hills, and do housework by hand. This continuous, low-stress movement keeps their hearts and muscles strong without causing unnecessary joint pain.

Equally important is their mental and social well-being. Constant mental stress can harm the body and make cells age faster. In contrast, people in long-lived communities stay closely connected with their families and friends. They also maintain a strong sense of purpose in life, known as ikigai in Japan or plan de vida in Costa Rica. Having clear reasons to wake up every morning, along with warm family support, protects them from loneliness and depression.

In conclusion, living a long and energetic life is not just a matter of good luck or genetics. By choosing healthy meals, staying physically active every day, and keeping positive relationships, people everywhere can enjoy a happier and healthier old age.
