Culture shock refers to the feeling of disorientation, anxiety, and confusion that many people experience when they visit or settle in a culture that is vastly different from their own. It is a completely natural psychological reaction to entering an unfamiliar cultural environment where common daily practices, social norms, and ways of communicating are no longer effective.
Most sociologists agree that culture shock progresses through four distinct stages. The first stage is often called the "honeymoon stage." During this period, newcomers are excited, fascinated, and fascinated by everything novel—from the local architecture and clothing to the culinary traditions. Everything seems charming and delightful.
However, as the novelty wears off, individuals often enter the second stage, known as the "frustration stage." Minor difficulties like using public transport, shopping for groceries, or dealing with language barriers can suddenly feel overwhelming. People may feel homesick, irritated, or critical of the host culture. They may complain about how things are done and withdraw from social interaction.
Fortunately, this uncomfortable stage is followed by the "adjustment stage." With time, newcomers gradually understand the logic behind the local ways of life and begin to regain their confidence. They establish new daily routines, make local friends, and learn to navigate cultural differences with humour and patience. Finally, in the "acceptance stage," individuals feel comfortable and fully integrated, realising that different does not necessarily mean worse.
