HOW DIGITAL MAPS ARE SAVING ANCIENT SITES

When the ancient city of Palmyra in Syria was damaged in 2015, historians feared that its temples would be lost forever. Yet today, students can still walk through the city — not in Syria, but in a computer laboratory. A team of archaeologists had made detailed 3D scans of the site before the damage, and these digital copies now allow anyone to explore the ruins as they once were.

This is just one example of how technology is transforming heritage conservation. In the past, experts relied mainly on photographs and hand-drawn maps. Today, drones can fly over large sites and create accurate models in a few hours. Laser scanners, meanwhile, record the exact shape of a wall down to the millimetre.

Supporters argue that digital records are especially valuable in countries where sites are threatened by war or natural disasters. If a building collapses, the data can be used to rebuild it. Critics, however, warn that a digital copy is not the same as the real thing. "A model on a screen cannot replace the feeling of standing in an ancient temple," says one conservationist. "We must not use technology as an excuse for doing nothing."

Most experts agree that the answer lies somewhere in between. Digital tools should be used to support, not replace, the work of protecting real sites.

THE PRICE OF FAME: TOURISM AND WORLD HERITAGE SITES

Every year, UNESCO adds new places to its list of World Heritage Sites. The title brings international recognition and, more importantly, money. (1) ______. Yet the same title can also bring problems. Once a site appears on the list, visitor numbers often rise sharply, and this sudden popularity may do more harm than good.

Consider the ancient town of Luang Prabang in Laos. After it was listed in 1995, tourist arrivals grew from around 100,000 a year to more than 500,000. Hotels and restaurants opened quickly, creating jobs and raising incomes. (2) ______. The old wooden houses were converted into guesthouses, and many local families moved out of the town centre because they could no longer afford the rent. In other words, the very community that gave the town its character began to disappear.

A similar story can be told about Machu Picchu in Peru. The site attracts about a million visitors every year. Concerned about erosion, the government now limits the number of visitors to 2,500 a day and requires them to follow fixed routes. (3) ______.

So what is the solution? Experts suggest several practical measures. First, local people should be involved in decisions about how their town is managed. Second, a share of ticket money should be spent on maintaining the site itself. Only then can a World Heritage title become a blessing rather than a curse.

Câu 31. Which of the following is the best title for the passage?

A. The government has decided to close the site completely.

B. Tourists are now free to walk wherever they like.

C. The limits have reduced the number of visitors to zero.

D. Such limits are welcomed by some but criticised by others.

Câu 39. What does the sentence "Only then can a World Heritage title become a blessing rather than a curse" mean?

A. A World Heritage title is always a curse.

B. Only UNESCO can decide whether a site is a blessing.

C. A World Heritage title is beneficial only when sites are managed carefully.

D. A World Heritage title should be given to more sites.

Câu 40. Which of the following best summarises the passage?

11

A

Sau "is" cần tính từ: "No previous experience is necessary".

12

B

Cần tính từ bổ nghĩa cho "backgrounds": "people from different backgrounds".

13

A

c (giới thiệu Hội An) → b (biện pháp hạn chế khách) → d (kết quả của biện pháp) → a (kết luận "As a result").

14

B

c (hỏi thông tin) → d (trả lời giờ và địa điểm) → a (hỏi giá) → b (trả lời giá).

15

C

a (mở đầu thư ứng tuyển) → c (lý do, kinh nghiệm) → d (thời gian rảnh) → b (kết thư).

16

D

b (nêu chủ đề) → a (ví dụ 1: 3D scanning) → d (ví dụ 2: virtual reality, có "meanwhile") → c (kết luận "Thanks to these tools").

17

B

b (nêu thực tế) → a ("However" nêu mặt trái) → d (giải thích mặt trái) → c ("therefore" kết luận).

18

D

"They are more than just bricks and stone." — "They" thay cho "old buildings", khớp với câu trước "Every old building tells a story".

19

A

"Fortunately, this situation is beginning to change." dẫn vào đoạn nói về giải pháp của kiến trúc sư.

20

C

Sau ví dụ nhà máy thành phòng tranh, câu kết: "Such projects breathe new life into old neighbourhoods."

21

D

"It can cost far more than building something new." — so sánh chi phí trùng tu với xây mới, sau "cost more than" dùng V-ing.

22

B

Bị động "can be preserved"; dẫn tới "the past and the present can exist side by side".

23

A

Toàn bài nói về việc công nghệ hỗ trợ bảo tồn di sản văn hoá.

24

29

D

33

B

34

C

Thông tin: "tourist arrivals grew from around 100,000 a year to more than 500,000".

35

D

"converted" = được chuyển đổi (mục đích sử dụng).

36

B

Sau khi nói danh hiệu mang lại tiền, câu nói về thái độ của người dân địa phương; "Yet" ở câu sau tạo tương phản.

37

C

Trước nói lợi ích (việc làm, thu nhập), sau nói chi phí xã hội (giá thuê, dân rời trung tâm) — cần câu chuyển "However, the changes also brought social costs".

38

D

Sau khi nêu biện pháp hạn chế khách, câu nêu hai luồng ý kiến trái chiều.

39

C

"Only then" = chỉ khi đó, tức là chỉ khi di sản được quản lý cẩn thận thì danh hiệu mới thực sự có lợi.

40

A

Tóm tắt đúng: du lịch mang lại cả lợi ích và vấn đề, nên di sản cần được quản lý cẩn thận.
