Section 3: Questions 71 – 76 (6.0 points)

Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C, or D to indicate the correct answer to each of the questions.

In many towns across Europe, a quiet revolution is taking place in community halls and church basements. At so-called "repair cafés", volunteers with toolboxes and sewing machines help visitors fix broken toasters, torn jackets and faulty lamps. The concept began in Amsterdam in 2009 and has since spread to more than thirty countries. Its appeal is partly financial — a repair often costs nothing more than a small donation — but the deeper motive is environmental. Every appliance that is mended rather than discarded keeps valuable metals and plastics out of landfill.

The scale of the problem is enormous. Electronic waste is now the fastest-growing category of household rubbish worldwide, with roughly fifty million tonnes produced annually. Much of this waste contains gold, copper and rare earth elements that are expensive to extract and difficult to recycle safely. Yet manufacturers frequently design products that are sealed shut, glued together, or fitted with batteries that cannot be replaced. Consumers, faced with repair bills that may exceed the price of a new item, usually choose to buy again.

Legislators have begun to respond. Several European countries now require manufacturers to supply spare parts for up to a decade after a product leaves the factory, and to publish repair manuals freely. Campaigners argue that such rules are long overdue, pointing out that extending the life of a smartphone by just one year saves as much carbon dioxide as taking two million cars off the road for the same period.

Critics, however, warn that legislation alone will not change habits. They note that many people simply do not know that repair services exist, or assume that mending is only for those who cannot afford to replace. Repair cafés address this misconception directly: visitors sit beside the volunteer, watch the repair unfold, and often leave with new confidence. As one organiser puts it, "We are not just fixing objects. We are fixing the idea that things are disposable."

Câu 71. Which of the following best serves as the title for the passage?

A. The Rising Cost of Household Appliances

B. Repair Cafés: Mending Objects and Mindsets

C. How Manufacturers Design Modern Gadgets

D. Electronic Waste in Developing Countries

Câu 72. According to paragraph 1, repair cafés ______

A. charge a fixed hourly fee for their services

B. were first set up in the Netherlands

C. are run by large electronics companies

D. only repair clothing and textiles

Câu 73. The word "discarded" in paragraph 1 is closest in meaning to ______

A. thrown away

B. repaired

C. purchased

D. collected

Câu 74. According to paragraph 2, why do many consumers choose to buy new products instead of repairing old ones?

A. New products are always of better quality.

B. Repair bills may be higher than the cost of a new item.

C. Spare parts are never available in shops.

D. They are unaware that products can be repaired.

Câu 75. The word "this" in paragraph 4 refers to ______

A. the belief that repairing is only for people who cannot afford new goods

B. legislation requiring manufacturers to supply spare parts

C. the amount of carbon dioxide saved each year

D. the idea that public habits cannot be changed

Câu 76. Which of the following is NOT mentioned in the passage?

A. Repair cafés first appeared in Amsterdam.

B. Manufacturers sometimes make products difficult to open.

C. Some countries require spare parts to be available for years.

D. Repair cafés have completely eliminated electronic waste in Europe.
