Ancestor worship is an ancient cultural ritual that has been practiced in Vietnam for thousands of years. It stems from the deep-rooted belief that the physical death of a person does not mean the complete end of their existence. Rather, the spirits of ancestors continue to reside alongside their descendants, offering blessings, guidance, and protection in times of hardship.

Almost every traditional Vietnamese home maintains an ancestral altar placed in the most solemn and prominent part of the house. On this altar, family members display portraits of the deceased, an incense burner, candle holders, and ceremonial cups. On special occasions such as Death Anniversaries (ngay gio) and the Lunar New Year (Tet), descendants prepare feasts of traditional dishes, fresh fruits, and wine to place on the altar. They light fragrant incense sticks and bow respectfully to invite their ancestors' souls to dine with the family. Before the invention of modern domestic appliances, preserving food during hot summer months presented a serious challenge. In many western countries during the 19th and early 20th centuries, households relied on an insulated appliance called an "icebox".

An icebox was typically a heavy cabinet made of oak or pine wood, lined on the inside with sheets of tin, zinc, or cork for thermal insulation. Large blocks of ice, which had been harvested from frozen rivers and lakes during winter and stored in insulated icehouses, were delivered directly to homes by the "iceman". The ice block was placed into an upper compartment of the icebox. As cold air naturally sinks, it circulated downward through the cabinet, keeping perishable groceries like milk, butter, and raw meat cool and safe from rapid spoilage.

Although iceboxes were a tremendous breakthrough compared to leaving food at room temperature, they required relentless maintenance. As the ice melted, water dripped into a tray at the bottom, which housewives had to empty every single day to avoid flooding the kitchen floor. By the 1930s, the mass adoption of electric mechanical refrigerators began to replace iceboxes, marking the end of an era in domestic history.

During the 19th and early 20th centuries, before the arrival of modern electrical entertainment, traditional puppet theater was one of the most beloved performing arts in Vietnamese villages. In particular, water puppetry (mua roi nuoc), which originated in the Red River Delta during the Ly Dynasty, held a distinctive position in rural culture.

The stage for water puppetry is a waist-deep pool of water, typically a village pond or a portable tank. Hidden behind a bamboo curtain, puppeteers manipulate wooden figures using submerged bamboo poles and string mechanisms. The puppets themselves are skillfully carved from light fig wood (go sung), coated with waterproof natural resin, and painted in bright colors. Characters represent figures from rural everyday life: cheerful farmers plowing fields, buffalo boys playing flutes, and fishermen casting nets, alongside mythical creatures like dragons and unicorns. Performances are accompanied by traditional Cheo singing and lively percussion from drums, bells, and wooden clappers. Water puppetry served not merely as lighthearted entertainment after exhausting harvest months, but as a living canvas depicting the spiritual resilience, folklore, and profound affinity with water that defined Vietnamese agrarian society.

Before the widespread adoption of domestic refrigerators, televisions, and motorized delivery vans, the street vendor was an indispensable figure in the social tapestry of Vietnamese towns and cities. Rain or shine, these itinerant merchants navigated paved avenues and winding alleys, carrying their mobile businesses on their shoulders with bamboo shoulder poles (don ganh).

Each end of the shoulder pole carried a balanced basket. One basket might hold a small clay charcoal brazier keeping broth simmering hot, while the other contained noodles, fresh herbs, bowls, and wooden chopsticks. Street vendors served an astonishing variety of traditional delicacies: from steaming bowls of Pho and spicy beef noodles to sweet snacks like tofu pudding (tao pho) and seasonal fruits. To advertise their arrival, vendors relied on distinctive melodic street cries (tieng rao). Each merchant had a unique vocal cadence and pitch that resonated through the quiet morning or late night, allowing housewives and hungry children inside their homes to recognize exactly what delicacy was passing by without having to open the door.

In modern times, modern convenience stores and app-based delivery services have rapidly taken over urban food distribution. While hygienic standards and speed have undeniably improved, the poetic sounds of tieng rao and the nostalgic image of vendors with balanced bamboo poles are gradually vanishing, lingering mostly in the fond memories of older generations.

Long before digital communications and modern newspapers reached rural communities, the public loudspeaker system (loa phuong or loa xa) functioned as the primary channel of public information across Vietnamese villages and towns. Mounted high atop wooden poles, village gates, or communal trees, these horn-shaped metal speakers were an inseparable part of daily existence for generations.

Every morning at 5:30 a.m. sharp, the loudspeaker sprang to life, broadcasting upbeat national radio broadcasts, agricultural schedules, vaccination advisories, and weather forecasts. In the evenings, it broadcast neighborhood notices, reminders about civic duties, and celebratory news about outstanding students. During wartime, the same loudspeakers sounded urgent air-raid sirens, instructing villagers to take immediate cover in earthen shelters.

In today's interconnected digital age, when news is instantly accessible through personal smartphones and computers, the communal loudspeaker is often perceived as an outdated nuisance by younger urbanites due to its loud volume. However, in times of sudden natural disasters such as river floods or unexpected storms, the loudspeaker continues to demonstrate its unparalleled reliability in alerting entire communities simultaneously. For many who grew up in the 20th century, the familiar morning static and crackling broadcast of the loudspeaker will forever remain the quintessential soundscape of their nostalgic childhood.
