Water puppetry (Múa rối nước) is a unique traditional art form that originated in the Red River Delta of northern Vietnam around the 11th century. In the past, when the rice fields were flooded after heavy seasonal rains, villagers would entertain themselves and celebrate successful harvests by standing waist-deep in water and manipulating puppets behind a bamboo screen.

Today, water puppetry is performed in a specially constructed pool of waist-deep water called the "water stage". The puppets are carved out of light wood, usually fig wood, which floats well on water, and are coated with multiple layers of waterproof resin to protect them from moisture and decay. Each puppet can weigh up to fifteen kilograms and is controlled by skilled puppeteers using long bamboo rods and strings hidden beneath the murky water surface. A live traditional orchestra, featuring drums, wooden bells, cymbals, horns, and the monochord (đàn bầu), accompanies the entire show. The musicians also sing and provide vocal dialogues for the puppets. The stories depicted in water puppetry are closely linked to Vietnamese folk tales and rural life.
