Community service is work done by a person or a group of people that benefits others. It is often done near the area where you live, so your own community reaps the benefits of your work. You do not get paid to perform community service, but you volunteer your time and energy.
Last year, a group of students in grade 7 at Quang Trung Secondary School started a project called "Green Sparks". The students noticed that there were a lot of plastic bottles, food wrappers, and plastic bags in the public park near their school. They decided to take action to make the environment cleaner and safer.
Every two weeks on Saturday morning, twenty members of the club gather at the park. They divide into small teams: one team picks up litter, another team sorts the rubbish into recyclable and non-recyclable materials, and the third team waters the young trees and flowers. In addition, they placed five wooden recycling bins with clear signs reminding local people not to throw trash on the grass.
Thanks to their hard work, the park has become a clean, green, and pleasant place for residents to walk and exercise. Furthermore, the students have developed great teamwork skills and learned how to protect the environment. They plan to expand their activities to other public areas in their town next month.
